Description
The VL53L1X is a state-of-the-art Time-of-Flight (ToF) laser-ranging sensor that enhances the ST FlightSense product family. It is the fastest miniature ToF sensor on the market, with accurate ranging up to 4 m and a fast ranging frequency up to 50 Hz.
Unlike conventional IR sensors, the VL53L1X uses ST's latest-generation ToF technology, which allows absolute distance measurement regardless of target colour and reflectance. (Sensor Datasheet). Since it uses a very narrow light source, it is good for determining the distance of only the surface directly in front of it. Unlike sonars that bounce ultrasonic waves, the 'cone' of sensing is very narrow. Unlike IR distance sensors that try to measure the amount of light bounced, the VL53L1X is much more precise and doesn't have linearity problems or 'double imaging' where you can't tell if an object is very far or very close.
It is also possible to program the ROI size on the receiving array, allowing the sensor's FoV to be reduced.
