Nevermore is renowned in the 3D printing community for its open-source air filtration systems and premium carbon pellets. Now, they’ve launched Nevermore Scorch, an exciting new air filtration medium specially designed for high-temperature environments and VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) filtration.
Why Care About VOCs?
VOCs are tiny particles that not only trigger our sense of smell but can enter the bloodstream through the lungs, affecting different organs. While some VOCs are harmless, others are toxic, making it hard to determine a “safe” level—especially since typical VOC meters can’t distinguish between dangerous substances like benzene and harmless ones like water vapor.
Nevermore Scorch: A High-Temp Solution
Most carbon filters lose efficiency at temperatures above 50°C, but Nevermore Scorch excels in heated printer chambers, where it captures a wider range of VOCs. This advanced filtration system is especially beneficial for printing with materials like ABS, known for releasing harmful styrene.
How It Works
Nevermore Scorch combines zeolite and potassium permanganate (KMnO4) to permanently trap VOCs and even convert harmful gases, such as styrene, into safer by-products like potassium benzoate. It’s a heat-resistant solution that becomes more effective in high temperatures, giving users peace of mind during intensive prints.
The filter material also provides a color indicator—changing from bright purple to dull grey—to signal when it’s time for replacement.
Mixing Guidelines
For optimal results, users can adjust the ratio of Scorch to carbon pellets depending on their chamber’s operating temperature:
- Below 35°C: 90% Carbon / 10% Scorch
- 40°C ± 5°C: 75% Carbon / 25% Scorch
- 50°C ± 5°C: 50% Carbon / 50% Scorch
- 60°C ± 5°C: 25% Carbon / 75% Scorch
- Above 65°C: 100% Scorch
